Labour to boost logistics

The UK’s logistics sector could be in for a huge boost under the new Labour government! With investment in new housing being promised and infrastructure set to be improved too, the logistics sector will be busy providing support.

Following the recent change of government, and the King’s Speech thereafter, there’s a renewed sense of cautious optimism in our sector. Both have promised investment and growth, things which simply can’t be achieved without support from the many hauliers and couriers spread out across the nation.

Chief Executive of Logistics UK, David Wells has been quoted as saying: “Logistics underpins all sectors of the economy to deliver for households, businesses and public services, every day and is a major sector in its own right, employing 8% of the UK workforce.” Also noting that “efficient, cost-effective logistics is critical to every single part of the UK’s economy” … And we couldn’t agree more!

Having promised 1.5 million new homes over the next 5 years (50% more than the previous government over the same period), it’s going to be a busy time in the construction and haulage industry. That’s a lot of plasterboards, blocks, concrete, insulation, timber and slates to move! Whether it’s taking building materials to site or removing waste, it will all require our brilliant logistics sector to muck in. This will surely provide new jobs and help provide security to those already in the industry, especially with the number of haulage and logistics firms which we’ve previously reported on having to shut down over recent years, it’s welcome news for the sector.

On top of the above, it’s important to note that the King’s Speech also mentioned the ‘National Wealth Fund Bill’ which aims to support the decarbonisation of haulage. This will be done through green financing and with the development of existing ports. The details of this bill will be keenly awaited across the UK, but all are committed to reducing our carbon footprint and helping to pull together to reduce global warming.
