Transport Minister supports RHA push for improved truckstops
Richard Holden, Roads Minister recently attended an event, in conjunction with Transport Focus, the RHA, and Logistics UK, where highlighting improvements for UK truck stops, was the hot topic.
The event, held at 'Hollies Trucktop' in Cannock, one of the best-reviewed truck stops in the UK, followed a survey in August by Transport Focus which aimed to gain a better insight into what needs drivers felt needed improvement across the UK network. The survey highlighted quality food, and better toilet and washing facilities were top of the agenda for drivers; the majority of responses were disparaging of existing rest stops, such as motorway service stations, as a result of them being crime hot spots with poor food options and inadequate restroom facilities.
Mr Holden said “It’s a must for truck stops to offer a good standard and good prices.”; promises of government funding to improve services, which could be used to improve exisiting washroom facilities, such as toilets and showers, and provide safer parking, with increased capacity. He continued “[this is] essential for the smooth functioning of the economy,” though was quick to admit planning permission rejection was a issue that was “unacceptable”, and something the government is comitted “to speed up”.
Rod McKenzie, from the Road Haulage Association, said the government needs to "urgently address both planning permission and to make truck stop installation essential for all [...] Truckers deserve safe and secure parking – not least protection from the growing fear of crime at truck stops, as well as the basic human right of toilets and food.”
Our drivers are certainly keen for improvements to be made, though thankfully we have not been a victim of crime of this kind, we know many are not so lucky. So what are your thoughts on existing truck stop facilities? Do you agree?
